The Limbe Wildlife Centre regularly receives reptiles confiscated by the Government of Cameroon. The reason is that crocodiles, snakes and lizards are a highly valued source of bushmeat in Cameroon. In order to keep the meat fresh, the animals are caught, kept, transported and sold alive at the various markets.
Most reptiles are released back to the wild, but 3 Nile crocodiles, 2 dwarf crocodiles, 3 turtles and 1 python have found their permanent residence at the LWC. The reptiles are used for education purposes and are very popular with the Cameroonian visitors.
