Mandrills are closely related to drills, but their ranges do not overlap with the Sanaga river being the boundery between the two. Because mandrills do not live north of the Sanaga river, the 14 mandrills at the Limbe Wildlife Centre originate from other regions of Cameroon.
One of the oldest animals in the LWC is the mandrill male Man Alone. As a young animal he came to the Victoria Zoo in the early 1980’s, where he was housed in a tiny cage. When the Victoria Zoo was transformed into the Limbe Wildlife Centre, he moved to a much more spacious enclosure. In time more mandrills arrived to form a real family group. Man Alone (photo left) has been the dominant male for a long time, but now he is losing his position and his colours to Prosper (photo right), a male born in 2000.
