On the morning of Saturday 12th May 2008, a hunter in Mayos took a baby chimpanzee back from the forest. He had killed the mother and wanted to sell the baby. Fortunately for the infant an American family that lives nearby heard about it and they were able to convince the hunter that it would be much better for the baby to be brought to a sanctuary. So they took the baby and brought it to the LWC.
On arrival, Mayos was in good health, but still very young; from her teeth we estimated her age at four months. She was not yet very mobile, just sitting and observing the world around her. Her legs were not yet strong enough for her to stand up, but if she held on to something she could move around a little bit. One of our volunteers took care of her day and night for 4 months and very slowly introduced her into the infant group. She is the smallest in the group, but is getting along well with the others.
