When Gah arrived at Limbe Wildlife Centre he was paralyzed in both arms and legs due to a traumatic injury that damaged his nervous system. It was not clear if he would ever be able to walk again. Gah underwent physiotherapy three times a day.
Two weeks later Gah started moving his left arm, followed by his left leg and later his right side. As his muscles grew stronger he succeeded in sitting up, and gradually he started crawling. Amazingly, when Gah was introduced to the baby chimpanzees he immediately struggled to his feet and took his first few steps.
Today he is walking, but he has never completely recovered from his injuries. He drags a bit with his feet and he seems to have a mental handicap. When chimpanzees come up to him he does not respond in a normal way and therefore the others always bother him. Too many times he has ended up with big bumps on the head. Today he is in a small group with other chimpanzees who also cannot cope very well in a big group, and he seems very happy with this arrangement.
